rest. work. rest.
Rhythms of Grace
matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)

"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion?
Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life.
I'll show you how to take a real rest.
Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it.
Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.
I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."

Proverbs 8

Chapter 8 brings Wisdom personified, and not just personified but boldly speaking her benefits.

I was particularly drawn to verses 22-31, when Wisdom explains her origins, that she was present before the earth was created and was the 'craftsman' at God's side.
Harking back to the chapter 3 where "wisdom founded the earth," the speech here by wisdom is particularly breathtaking to me.

What does it mean that wisdom founded the earth? Does that mean she lies at the very core of our created-ness?

It doesn't really mean that we have wisdom, it just means that our existence was a wise decision on God's part, since wisdom was there at his creating of us.

That's counter-intuitive to me.

I often think our existence is a huge, fat mistake, and many things would have been much better off without us being here to wreck things, to slaughter each other, to build our evil into tall structures and constantly break the heart of God.

But here, the voice of wisdom reminds me that she was appointed from eternity, and that "I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind."

I shall stop to savor it now - wisdom delighting in me.
How wonderful.

God, in his wisdom, delights in me.

Perhaps part of me learning to be wise, is learning to delight in myself, and by extension, the whole world, all of mankind and rejoicing in his presence.

Wisdom promises that if I seek her I shall find.

I shall begin with delight.
