beat #50 - jasmine [proverbs, day 23] (Thursday, May 23, 2013 / 9:39 AM)
v. 4-5
"Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle."
Now, if only this was mentioned more often.
Oh, the beauty of the Proverbs.
As people of God we talk about our relationship with wealth in such ambiguous terms...But here is a suggestion for wisdom, to show restraint and not wear ourselves out in the pursuit of wealth.
If that is not applicable scripture, I don't really know what is.
Money is a hard thing, we need it so desperately to live, it is always simultaneously problem and solution because we have given it so much power over us.
Even the proverb acknowledges that money has power of its own, it has the power to leave us crippled when it departs.
So restrain yourself, do not wear yourself out getting rich - it is not worth it.
v. 10-11
"Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless, for their Defender is strong; he wil take up their case against you."
If in our pursuit of wealth, we go further to take what belongs to another away...
I feel as though the entire history of the world is held in these verses.
Defender, you see my complicit hands...
How glad am I of Christ interceding always, and Spirit guiding always, for the sake of the guilty...
Grace is so incredibly unfair, but God's justice prevails, even if we don't see it yet.
